Howlite (also kwown as Magnesite) was named after Henry How, who discovered it in 1868 in Nova Scotia. Howlite is a borate or soft, porous mineral and caution should be taken around water. It is mainly found in Canada and California but some deposits have also been found in Turkey, Germany, Mexico and Russia. It is thought to be a calming stone and a non-traditional stone for those born under the zodiacal sign of Gemini. Additionally, howlite is believed to eliminate anger and absorb negative energy.
In it's mined state, it is usually milky white, grey, yellow and often dispersed with dark-brown or black veins. Because it is so porous, it is a favorite stone to dye since it will maintain it's dark veins and create fantastic looking stones.
